Kruklanki commune is located in the north-eastern part of the Warmia-Masuria Province, in the district of Giżycko in the eastern part of the Great Masurian Lakes Region. Forests and lakes covering a total of 60% of the area are its true treasure. The landscape of Kruklanki commune was shaped during the last Baltic Sea glaciation.

The glacier, which occurred and receded from the area several times around ten thousand years ago, left behind many features of the landscape we see today, like different kinds of moraines and deep valleys, of which lakes are the most picturesque. Gołdopiwo, Sołtmany and Żywe are some of the largest lakes. Most of the lakes and ponds are connected by waterways. They are inhabited by ducks, grebes, coots, swans and many other species.

The sights of Kruklanki commune can be explored on foot or by bike. A walking interpretive trail of high educational value has been marked recently for visitors to enable them to learn not only about natural values but also about the history of the commune. There are also bike routes across the fields, forests and meadows. Hilly terrain, with snow cover lasting for a couple of months, is perfect for cross country skiing and sleigh rides.

The varied terrain and soil type create favorable conditions for many forms of vegetation like forests, meadows, water plants and reeds. The traditional Prussian farm buildings lend a unique character to the area. Being eco-friendly is at the heart of the local people’s approach to farming. The biggest attraction of the community is Borecka Forest.

In the area there are four nature reserves covering over 650 ha. The largest one is the centrally located Borki Reserve established in 1958 with an area of 232 ha. The diverse landscape is rich in fortifications from World War II which formed part of the Giżycko Region Fortifications. In the vicinity of Kruklanki there were several dozen shelters for 1-2 machine guns, as well as infantry, communication and command shelters. The fortifications have never had to withstand any attack.

Most of the villages in the area emerged in the 16th century. The church in Kruklanki is the only historic monument from that time. It was built in 1574 and then rebuilt and refurbished in Baroque style in the 17th century.

There are also remains of one of the largest reinforced concrete railroad bridges in Masuria. The bridge was built in the village of Grądy Kruklaneckie in 1908 over the stream connecting the lakes of Kruklin and Gołdopiwo. It was a five-span bridge, almost the same in size as the famous bridges in Stańczyki. The railway station complex from 1905, Evangelical cemetery, Roman Catholic parish cemetery from the 15th century and the remains of the Evangelical cemetery situated on the pass between the Brożówka and Gołdapiwo lakes are also well worth seeing.
