The landscape of the Kruklanki commune was shaped during the last Baltic Sea glaciation. The glacier, which occurred and receded from the area several times, left behind many features of the landscape we see today like different kinds of moraines and deep valleys. Gołdopiwo, Sołtmany and Żywe are some of the largest lakes. Most of the lakes and ponds are connected by waterways.

The varied terrain and types of soil create favorable conditions for many forms of vegetation like forests, meadows, water plants and reeds. The traditional Prussian farm buildings lend a unique character to the area. Being eco-friendly is at the heart of the local people’s approach to farming. The biggest attraction of the community is Borecka Forest.

Large areas of the forest are rich in natural vegetation, mostly deciduous and mixed forests with many boreal species. Over 20 plant communities have been identified by botanists in the area. Mixed forests with hornbeams and oaks occupy the largest area – among them are deciduous and mixed forests on clay ground with dominant tree species such as oak, hornbeam, linden, spruce or common ash.

Mixed spruce forests and mixed coniferous forests form a large part of Borecka Forest. In the lower parts of the area there are coniferous forests, riparian ash-alder and swamp alder forests. Some of the trees are over 100 years old. The areas are protected as nature reserves. The biggest one is the centrally located Borki Nature Reserve. The pride of the forest are, undoubtedly, lakes like Wolisko, numerous streams, bogs and large meadows.

Many protected and rare plant species can be found here such as yew, Daphne mezereum, ramson, Jacob's ladder, beautifully blooming orchids like Lesser Butterfly-orchid and Greater Butterfly-orchid. Many interesting animals live here too. Kruklanki prides itself on 50-60 European bisons that live here in the wild. Some of the bisons are kept in a special enclosure and can be observed from an observation deck. Deers, red deers, wild boars are common in the area. Some of the rare animals include elks and large predators like wolves (about 20 animals) and a pair of lynxes.

Common animals include foxes, badgers, martens and other small predators. Diverse habitats make Borecka Forest and neighboring areas a perfect nesting place for about 140 species of birds that include, rare in Poland, white-tailed eagles, lesser spotted eagles, kites, ospreys, eagle owls, black storks and white-backed woodpeckers. Cranes and Hazel Grouses are often seen here. Lakes with adjacent reeds and wetlands are particularly rich in avifauna. In spring by Babka and Brożówka lakes you can hear the booming of Great Bittern which is a very rare species.

The lakes are inhabited by numerous ducks, grebes, coots, swans and many other species. You can explore the area by bike. A trail of high educational value has been marked recently for visitors to enable them to learn not only about natural values but also about the history of the commune. There are also bike routes across the fields, forests and meadows.

Kruklanki Commune is located on the border of three attractive geographical regions: Great Masurian Lakes, Mazury Garbate and Elk Lake District. The road connecting Giżycko and Gołdap (border crossing) runs across the area.

The commune area is a combination of woods of Borecka Forest, several lakes and Sapina River, located in a picturesque, hilly terrain. The main tourist attractions were created by nature itself.

There are fourteen clear lakes in the area of the commune surrounded by a special silent zone. The largest lakes are Gołdapiwo, Sołtmany, Kruklin and Żywe. Sapina River, an attractive, 26 km kayaking route, connecting the Kruklin Lake with Mamry flows across some of them.

Sights of Kruklanki commune can be explored on foot or by bike. Next to the Wolisko forester’s lodge there is a place where bison, king of the forest, can be seen. Visitors will surely enjoy the interpretive trail called "Join us to discover the secrets of Kruklanki."

A well-developed tourist infrastructure with more than 1000 beds makes Kruklanki commune an attractive starting point for tourists visiting hot-spot places like Gierłoż, Stańczyki, Lipka, Mazury Channel, Mamerki and Rapa) or enjoying the exciting cultural events in the region (Giżycko with "Szanty", Mrągowo with " Piknick Country", and “Noc Kupały" in Kruklanki).
